Two UW Medicine scientists made this year's Time 100 list — the magazine's annual list of the world's most influential people.
Genome scientist and UW Medicine professor Evan Eichler was honored with fellow scientists Karen Miga, Adam Phillippy and Michael Schatz, in the list's innovation category for their work in advancing the understanding of human evolution, common and rare diseases, and the structure and function of the human genome.
Tulio de Oliveira, a bioinformatics expert and affiliate professor for University of Washington's Department of Global Health, was named to the list alongside Sikhulile Moyo, his former student, in the pioneering category. De Oliveira works at an international site for the United World Antiviral Research Network, of which UW is a member. His and Moyo's work in Africa helped identify the Omicron variant.
The Time 100 list features the year's most prominent figures, from politics and activism to pop culture and science.
Other honorees this year with Seattle connections include Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, whose write-up was penned by former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, and OL Reign star Megan Rapinoe, who was named to Time's list alongside U.S. women's national soccer team members Alex Morgan and Becky Sauerbrunn.
