Coming out of law school, what drew you to public health? I’ve wanted to be a lawyer since I was 8 years old. My grandfather, John Slaby, was an attorney, and I always idolized him. He was passionate about social justice, so from an early age I always assumed I’d work for a nonprofit or governmental agency as a way to follow in his footsteps. Focusing my career on combining both public health and the law ultimately brought me to 98point6.

Startup environments are inherently risky. What do you wish you had known before entering that realm? I put a lot of effort into assessing the risks prior to joining, so I don’t think I’ve encountered a negative surprise thus far. I read about startups, talked with friends who worked for startups and spent a lot of time getting to know the CEO, Robbie Cape, before making my decision. I think I met with Robbie around six times before accepting the job.

How do you deal with stress? Regular exercise and plenty of sleep are critical. Running is a great way to quiet my mind. I’m training for a half-marathon, which is giving me plenty of opportunity to do all of the above.
