Companies in the Triangle were on the receiving end of more than half of $5 million that the North Carolina Board of Science, Technology and Innovation recently allocated to 101 companies across the state.

More than 50 companies in the Triangle area received grant funding as part of the state's One North Carolina Small Business Program. This program supports companies that have received or are pursuing funding through two federal programs, the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs.

The state funding is split between two types of grants. One is intended to match funds North Carolina companies have already received from the federal programs and the other is designed to support to companies as they prepare and submit proposals to the federal programs. Together, the federal programs award $3.7 billion annually.

In total, the 53 Triangle firms received about $3.5 million in matching grants, ranging from about $25,000 to $75,000. This includes Durham-based 410 Medical, which in late August announced it had received funding through a Small Business Innovation Research program with the U.S. Air Force to develop a compact, military-grade version of its rapid infusion system.

More than half of the 50 companies statewide receiving incentive grants are based in the Triangle. Gov. Roy Cooper's office, which announced the funding Thursday, didn't release the amounts awarded through this grant type.

Prior to this most recent allocation, the state had awarded through this program about $27.5 million to 452 companies since it began in 2006. The total amount awarded has changed annually, with 29 companies receiving $1.5 million in matching funds in fiscal year 2021.

Previously, there were years where the program didn't receive funding from state lawmakers. But that changed in the budget Cooper signed last November, which included the $5 million recently awarded and $2 million in recurring money. The North Carolina Biosciences Organization advocated for the the inclusion of recurring funds to support smaller life sciences and technology companies in the early stages of development.
